When you think of a film that is soulful, sexy, and poetic the film that comes in to mind is Love Jones. Along with African American classics like Brown Sugar, The Woods, and Love and Basketball, Love Jones is on that list as an unforgettable classic. This romantic drama depicted the modern day love life of two African Americans that are trying to find love but aren’t much good at it.

The setting of Love Jones is featured is Chicago Illinois, a city full of history and cultural. This film begins with a beautiful photographer, named Nina Mosley, played by the classic beauty Nia long. Nina has just gone through a break up with her fiancé and moves to Chicago in hopes to begin a new life. Little did she know how fast her new life would begin.

During a night out at a poetry lounge with Nina’s close friend she encounters a smooth talking writer that goes by the name of Darius Lovehall, played by Larenz Tate. Nina’s heart refuses him at first, but after a cat and dog chase, the dog was dominant and Darius won over Nina.

One poet and one photographer, sounds like paradise right? But the two found out just how much trouble could be in paradise as they explore their love life together. The two drag out a frustrating 2 years of inconsistency in their relationship but finally put aside their stubbornness and rekindle as if time had stood still.

What I loved most about this film was the characterization, dialogue and setting. All the characters where centric and soulful and had a significant part in this film. The dialogue was simple, but yet made a statement. And the setting was always dimly lit and calm.

Nia Long is the filmiest of this movie because her character was something that women idolized. She was cool and calm, with a sense of humor and not to mention she was beautiful during the course of the entire film. Her wardrobe was very classic and stylish. Her hair was flawless and her lipstick was always a sexy dark. She was the type of women many men fell in love with.

Love Jones is a classical love story that can’t be recreated. It has even been labeled as a black modern day, “When Marry Meet Sally.” Without a doubt I would rate this film a 5 out of 5.
