The film Bridget Jones’s Diary is a laugh out loud romantic-comedy that I give two thumbs up. Bridget Jones’s Diary follows the life of Bridget Jones, a 30-something year old woman (Renee Zellweger) working in the publishing business in London, who is unlucky in love. At the beginning of the film Bridget decides to change her personal and professional life. She realizes that if she is ever going to get married she has to change how she approaches her relationship with men. While, in her professional life she decides to look for a new job where she is respected as an employee. One of the things that make this movie different from other romantic-comedies is that it’s told from Bridget’s point of view as she writes in her diary.
Academy Award winner Zellweger ends up in a love triangle with two of England’s leading men Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. Grant plays Daniel Clever, Jones’s boss who he sleeps and then cheats on her with American woman. This devastates Bridget so again she tries to make a change in her life by finding a new job and getting over Clever. As Jones moves forward in her life she begins to develop feelings for Mark Darcy played by Firth. Darcy is a top-lawyer who has been nothing but, rude to Bridget since they first met, however he realizes that he was not only rude to her but he likes her too.
I fell in love with this movie back in high school and loved it ever since. What makes this movie unique is that the character deals with real issues. She deals with her messed up love life, her mother constantly trying to set her up on a date, her crazy friends, and her body issues. Bridget Jones is a real woman dealing with a series of unfortunate events at this particular stage in her life. For example, Bridget is completely honest in her diary. One of my favorite scenes is when she writes down in her diary the amount of cigarettes she has smoked that day plus her current weight. Since she is starting this diary in a new year she vows to not date losers, decreases her cigarette intake and decides to lose weight. As the movie progresses you realize that it’s hard to break old habits and that Bridget struggles just like everyone else.
Some say this movie makes someone going through hard times sadder. I have to disagree. I think that this movie makes you laugh and realize that your life isn’t as crazy a Bridget Jones’s life.
